Here in the future, yesterday was St. Patrick's Day. As mixed as my feelings are about the confused origins of this holiday (by wearing green am I showing support for the annihilation of snakes? pagans? Irish pride? excitement that winter is ending in the Northern Hemisphere?), it certainly makes for a fun night out. For once Nick, Colin, and I looked like relatively normally dressed individuals(at least to start out with) in among the desperate attempts to be fully clad in green.
We tried to start our St. Paddy's day celebrations properly with Irish Car Bombs. But the Irish "bartender" had never heard of such a thing. He was flabbergasted when upon putting together all the ingredients, the Guinness curdled. Flustardly, he decided to give us each a shot of Jameson and a Guinness. Then we each got a pint of Murphy's, which suppodedly came with a one in six chance to win a t-shirt, but they were out of prizes. Boo.
Enter Ui and Lui, our new Samoan friends. They are clad in green t-shirts (as self-proclaimed "brown Irish"men), ready to irish step dance at the drop of a hat, and very fond of buying us drinks. The drunkening began when Ui and Lui apparently teamed up to buy me a drink as a joke. Colin also jokingly, showed up at the bar with his fists raised and Ui promptly filled one with a friendly green beer bottle.
It was at about this time that we remembered our grand plans to eat dinner that had been forgotten in among green beer confusion. Colin and I took on Mission Food and found a Whitebait sandwhich stall (grill with a piece of paper stuck to it that siad 'Whitebait sandwich, $5" or something to that effect) manned by the toothless brigade. Not only did I get a $2 hotdog, but we were given a pink and green plaid jacket by an especially generous parking meter.
We made it back to the bar with a sandwich discreetly hidden in my newfound sleeve. With fuller bellies we headed on to Irish bar round two. Lui saved Nick from the Popo by grabbing the Heineken he tried to walk down the street drinking and dumping it on the sidewalk. He was actually thanked by the lovely n zed police! Imagine that happening in the U.S.!
We introduced ourselves to Irish Bar round two with another round donated by the lovely Samoan duo. Now, this is Nick's favorite part: A seated Lui reinterpreted "Sex on Fire" by pointing at the bartender and yelling: "I wanna fuck you on fire!" A new hit single? Maybe!
This post is getting rather long, but so many hilarious things happened! Including, but not limited to me being given the loser sign by a guy wearing the same shirt as me, which I reciprocated with the only acceptable recourse, a classic Whatever! W. And after being forced to limbo under a cane being told by an Irish bloke that Bangor is the little-known capital of Maine (Colin was told the same thing by a fellow who spent at least 4 years in Vermont).
Anyway, it was a lovely story making evening on this side of the world. It ended ever so happily with home-made fried chicken and fries (fine, chips). We discovered that Kiwis spend the 17th of March much as Americans do, but there seem to be more legitimate Irishmen.

Good show down south, lads. sounds like st. patty's was a success. I think the cop statement generally6 holds true in all cases except, of course, officer thunder dan hayden, who would've gladly thanked your samoan friend for relieving nick of a sidewalk ale. good response with the 'w', rania, a classic comeback. you also should have called him a buttmunch.
up in Valencia, spain, ana and i also celebrated st. patty's out of ireland and out of the US with varying success. I drank 2 pints of guinness which should've earned me a free guinness top hat, but they were out of prizes. i guess they underestimated st. p's day in both hemispheres. i also had a shot of irish whisky and i think later on we got kabobs to your whitetail.
so, in the end, i suppose you all win with the 2 samoan friends... we had limited interaction with some drunk irish people in the pub and maybe met a few on the streets (which were filled for a completely separate occasion, las fallas) but no lasting (or beer-saving, street consumption is totally acceptable up here) companions.
now ana is back in london and i am in barcelona going to see girl talk tonight. miss you guys so much.
or whatever...
